Iggy Pop & Lily

For the last 20 years I’ve had at least one Javanese cat. I love these sweet, talkative, funny, smart cats. Unfortunately, folks aren’t breeding them much on the west coast. When both my cats passed I started hunting for another breeder of Javanese. I figured I’d get one javi & one rescue. Then I found out that finding a javi was gonna be rather difficult. No longer could I have a cat flown to me. Since 911 one has to drive. That limited me somewhat. Then there was a cat show down in San Mateo and I went along with my cat carrier. My best friend who was living with me at the time (along with Sydney the 15 yo Iguana), laughed at me and told me I’d be disappointed. But I wasn’t. There weren’t a lot of breeders showing Javanese at the time. But there was a breeder from Phoenix whom I’d seen online and he had TWO female kittens for sale. I wanted a male and a female. Lily came home with me and promptly fell in love with Sydney.

I spent eight months trying to get a rescue with siamese (and male). It was very puzzling as to why the SPCA would not let me have a kitten I’d see at one of their street gatherings in the neighborhood. I filled out forms. I went in person. Then I started online. I went up to Santa Rosa to another cat show. A breeder said she had a male Siamese. I told her I wanted him (sight unseen). I emailed her. She stalled me. Finally she told me she’d sold him to someone else. I was puzzled. Then I found a breeder in Modesto who had orientals. I emailed her & she told me she had two females pregnant at the same time. She would let me have the first non-show male cat. I told her I didn’t want a black cat (they don’t photograph well … and as a photographer I photograph my cats a lot!). She understood. Then she sent me photos of the kittens, pointing out the two males. I picked the seal pointed male. When the photo of him at five weeks arrived, it was in a browser window, one of many I had opened. The photo peeking out next to my kitten window was one of Iggy Pop who was going to be performing locally. They were in the very same position! I added Iggy Pop to my list of names. Manfred Man, Moby & Frankie were at the top of the list.

When I got the 12 week male kitten home I started with the names at the top of my list. The kitten could not be bothered with the top three. Then I called Iggy Pop and he came bouncing into the room. Well, what do you know! The kitten has a new name. He loves his name. And he’s a funny cat. I haven’t lived with a Siamese since I left home. And I really didn’t think they were all that different from a Javanese. But boy was I wrong!

The first thing I had to do was dog proof my house. Then I had to ban all things plastic loose in the house. Plastic bags had to be in drawers, locked away. I had to buy a new trash can! Lily, the Javanese was only a year older, and while she is smart as a whip, she also understood the word No! When she turned one she settled down into being a cat. Though her bad habit of chewing on cords (she especially loves firewire & phone cords) has been expensive, she’s a good cat.

Javanese are social, friendly, loving, nosy, with bird-like voices. They usually love to ride on your shoulders (Lily doesn’t). They love company (Lily does). Siamese like to be the main cat for their person. They’re smart, not always social with strangers. Iggy Pop is smart (ignores NO!), pushes Lily off my lap, and likes strangers. He’s also silly, fetches things (prefers hard plastic that comes in packaging), and wants to be a circus cat even though Lily seems to understand the commands better.

Walking….. in SF

Laidley & Harper

I started this thing of walking & keeping track of my miles last May. At first I just ran errands by foot & it was easy to meet my goal of 10 miles in 7 days. But I upped my goal to 15 & it got much harder to meet my goal with just errands. So I started planning walks. And this being SF it seemed just perfect to combine a bit of snapshots of the houses when I went to the part of town I call “Architect’s Alley”. It’s around Laidley & Harper on the most south end of Noe Valley (babyville!).

Architects Alley really isn’t all that far away from me, less than 2 miles, which means I’m not tired at all & can enjoy the weird houses. I added some mileage by avoiding the hills & heading over to hipsterville, I mean Valencia on 24th st. This is always a nice detour because if I feel like it & have the loose change (ok $4 is NOT loose change by my standards), I’ll get a large latte. I love their latte’s & I’ll just have to write more about them later. Instead, here are some of the houses!

The thanksgiving 2005 paint job took until the spring of 2006. It was not an easy 4 day job. I’d already spent days cleaning up and packing shit up. Nope, the majority of that month was spent stripping the ancient wallpaper. When I first had a very small wall bubble up and crack open to reveal vintage, victorian lovely sage with cream little floral wallpaper I had to stop. And I took photos. and I marveled at this wallpaper I’d never be able to save.

Lucky for me, Linda had a steamer. The walls are now amazingly beautiful in a soft rose with a soft white above.

Thanksgiving 2005

I had the best intentions. I was going to paint my bedroom. I’d planned this activity for the last 6 months. I knew I’d have 4 days to get the damn thing done. Most of the work would be done in packing shit up and cleaning. Then the priming would be intense & finally the painting which would be pure pleasure. I love a freshly painted room. I was looking forward to finishing up this task.

But no, that office flu/cold thingie hit me. Not enough to just knock me on my ass and make me whimper and whine but enough to make everything difficult and easy to blow off the big paint project. I’ve been sucking down the airborne, olive leaf, quercetin, emergen-c and tea (not enuf cold/flu tea though!).

I did make my fab low carb pumpkin cheesecake & I actually wrote down the recipe. It was the best one so far. The first year I went on atkins (it’s been 5 years now) I must have made 5 or 6 cheesecakes, none of which were edible. The secret is in the eggs. Lots of eggs make yummy cheesecake, as does sour cream.

So here you go:
Pumpkin Swirl Cheesecake

1 1/2 cup of almond flour
5 TBL butter (melted)
5 packets of splenda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp nut meg
1/2 tsp vanilla

melt butter w/3 packets of splenda
add 1/8 tsp of vanilla

in a bowl add flour, cinnamon (1/4 tsp), nut meg(1/8 tsp), 2 packets of splenda. Stir. Add butter mixture.

Mash into pie pan & up sides.

Bake in 350 degree oven for 6 minutes with cookie sheet under pan.

Mixture:

2 boxes of cream cheese (8 oz each)
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 heavy cream
1 can pumpkin
1/2 cup or (12 packets) splenda

5 eggs
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. ginger (I would have used more but that was all I had)

In mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, Splenda and vanilla until fluffy. Add 1/2 sour cream & 1/2 cream. beat more.

Put 1 cup of mixture in another bowl and beat in 1 can pumpkin. Beat in spices.

At LOW SPEED add 3 eggs to the plain & 3 eggs to pumpkin.

Pour the plain mixture into pie pan. Swirl in pumpkin mixture. Use a knife and swirl the two together into a swirly design.

Bake at 325 degrees for 50 mintues.

For the optional topping: OH YOU MUST DO THIS IT WAS YUMMY!
mix up 1/2 sour cream, 2 TBL heavy cream, 2 packets of splenda, 1/2 tsp of vanilla spread over cheesecake & bake 5 minutes more.

Turn off the oven and leave door closed for 30 minutes.

Open oven door but leave cheesecake in the over for 30 more minutes.
take out for 2 hours. Refrigerate.

yum!
